Giving Back to Your Community: The Best Way to Lead A More Purposeful Life

Giving Back to Your Community: The Best Way to Lead A More Purposeful Life

The True Meaning of Martial Arts.

Altruism, philanthropy, charity, community service; give it any name you want, but it is beyond a doubt that giving back to your community is an enriching experience.  At MSD Kenpo Karate, students are not only learning to kick and punch, but rather the ways to leading a more purposeful life.  My name is Robert Guida, owner and instructor, and I am teaching my students the true meaning of Kenpo, which is to serve others. As a 21 year Army officer, I find that giving back to my country and community are important in setting a positive example for my students at MSD Kenpo Karate. Giving back to the community is an important aspect of any great martial arts academy.  Martial arts not only builds a student’s confidence and prepares them for various self-defense situations but teaches students important topics on building positive character development.

Helping Others:  The Benefit of Better Mental Health & Well-being

Giving back to your community not only feels good but creates a sense of self-worth.  By giving back to the community, it not only makes us more generous, but gives us a sense of purpose and happiness in doing something for others who need it more.  Intrinsically, everyone is motivated by helping others and being tied to a bigger purpose in life.  It is often said that it is better to give than to receive, but did you know that this is backed by scientific research?  Evidence shows that helping others is beneficial for your own mental health and well-being.  It can help reduce stress, increase self-esteem, improve emotional well-being, and has even shown benefits to physical health and longevity in life.

Giving Back to The Community:  How Can We Get Involved?

Kenpo and other various martial arts is the true balance of mental, physical, and spiritual health.  So, what are ways you can get involved in fulfilling the true meaning of martial arts?  Some ideas for how you can get more involved in giving back to your community include:  volunteering, mentoring, community service, or giving back to a charity that is close to your heart.  As martial arts practitioners, one of the easiest ways in giving back to your community, is to share the benefits you have personally gained through the martial arts.  Referring students to us, allows you to give the various benefits of martial arts to others, while becoming an important mentor in someone else’s training.

Lasting Impact as Martial Artists on Future Generations

Although taking time out for voluntary activities sounds difficult initially, and can seem like a daunting task, remember that even the smallest gestures of helping others in your community can create an altering and lasting effect.  At the end of the day it is not about what you have or even what you have accomplished, but rather

  • who you have lifted
  • who you have made better
  • what you have given back

It is important that I teach our youth and adults, that when we leave this world, we have done something that will create a lasting impact on future generations.  Giving back to the community, and the idea of selfless service is the true purpose of Kenpo and the best way to begin to lead a more purposeful life.
